Dear Friends
I am writing to all of you who love WTJU and the Rock this stations provides everyday from 2-4pm. Most of you are in C-ville (like me) and listen at work through headphones or your office stereo, but some of you are listening from very far far away- and still keep the rock from Charlottesville in your hearts by streaming it everyday on your computers.
Last week, the program manager of WTJU decided to take Rock off the Air from its regular spot at 2-4pm. The station will only play jazz, classical, and folk during the day. Rock will only get a limited time slot in the evening- a time that is hard to get underwriters and support from listeners like you. This could possibly end up dissolving all Rock at the station – most of the Rock DJ’s shows are now gone.
The Rock DJ’s have been creating huge exposure for the station and for rock around town- with the WTJU Dance Parties at the Tea House and numerous other events. These DJ’s are all volunteers that give their time every week to make something special for our community. They are devastated due to the notice that was given and the reasons behind this change. We as listeners and supporters will start to feel the huge whole that will be left.
Please help support all the Rock DJ’s by taking the time to write a letter to the programs manager, Burr Beard bb3vx@eservices.virginia.edu and copy the Office of Public Affairs nancy@virginia.edu with the subject line “Please keep Rock alive at WTJU!”
If you don’t want to write a letter, just copy this letter, sign the bottom with your name and email, and send it to the programs manager and public affairs office. Along with your letters, if you can please make a donation to one of your favorite rock shows- maybe we can keep rock on the air from 2-4pm.
Thanks to all the ROCK DJ’s over the years!
~Liz Rhodes
Thanks for the letter, Liz.
Actually, according to the new schedule, the station will not even be playing Jazz during the day. Actually, we don’t even know WHAT they’ll be playing during the day. Supposedly it will be formally announced tomorrow.
Suffice to say, the Rock Department is getting screwed. Actually, EVERY Department is getting screwed (NObody is happy about these changes), but the Rock Department is getting screwed hardest of all.
James
Thanks for the Update James. (James is one of the DJ’s for WTJU and one of the monster heads behind nailgun). Many people in C-ville have been watching what is going on. I, personally, hope that WTJU will continue with its classical, jazz, and rock programming during the day.
However, I know change comes. Hopefully both sides will be able to listen to one another and create a better WTJU- one that still allows for free form and creativity to continue in the programming (this quirky trait is what draws most listeners to WTJU), and a way for the station to maintain enough money to keep the station going.
WTJU will continue to be freeform!!! At last night’s town hall meeting, our community came out and showed its faith, love and support for the station and the DJs. Remember your support is still needed, go to http://wtju.radio.virginia.edu/, listen and give!
cool station pic by the way
